HISTORY

Gateshead Old Town Hall is the only surviving purpose-built Victorian town hall in Tyne and Wear and is one of only five comparable listed Victorian town halls in the north east.

The municipal heart of Gateshead for some 120 years, it previously housed municipal offices, a Council chamber, a police station and magistrates’ court complete with cell block and police house, a substantial public hall and refreshment rooms.

The Council chamber, civic suite and most council offices were relocated to the new Civic Centre in 1987. The building has latterly been in use by a number of mainly social and cultural sector bodies.

There are two unusual open spaces associated with the Old Town Hall - a paved square on the West Street frontage with a free-standing clock tower which was presented in 1892 as a mayoral gift, and the enclosed former drill yard to the police station and cell-block to the rear, with vehicular entrance off Swinburne Place.

Gateshead benefits from excellent access to both vehicles via the A167 and public transport with a Tyne and Wear Metro station and also a Nexus public transport interchange located within the town centre a short walk from the subject site.

Newcastle City Centre is located approximately 10 minutes’ walk to the north and is easily accessible on foot, via public transport or vehicle.

Newcastle Central Station also provides national rail links with a variety of direct rail services running daily. There is a direct service to London which runs every half hour on weekdays with a journey time of approximately 3 hours.

The site is located within Gateshead town centre which is situated to the south of the River Tyne, within walking distance to Gateshead Quays.

The Old Town Hall Quarter is situated directly off West Street within Gateshead town centre, immediately north of the new Trinity Square development which has brought a mix of further residential, leisure and retail use to the area.

As the site is located within close proximity of the Tyne Bridge there are main roads to the north, east and west of the site which provide access into and out of Gateshead.
